Spice Rubbed Tinfoil Salmon

Tinfoil Salmon is an easily prepared dish that takes only a few minutes of prep time and can be modified to make a variety of delicious dishes

Total Cooking Time: 30 minutes

I will say, as a pescatarian, fish is one of the only meats that I cook and I’ve always been a bit hesitant to approach this one. I feel like fish is one of those things to either easily overcook or undercook and it’s hard to get the fish just right. Salmon is one in particular that I had a hard time making.

There was no perfect recipe that made the Salmon dish just right especially since I have been a little less keen on Salmon as of late. But then I remembered cooking with Tinfoil and my mind began to race to make a spice-rubbed tinfoil Salmon.

Ingredients

The ingredients needed for this dish are 1. Salmon and 2. Spices. I only got one Salmon steak as I am cooking one. For the spices, I decided to go with a more Indian-inspired dish use: Turmeric, Cumin, Chili Pepper, Garlic Powder, Salt, and Pepper. Oh, and some olive oil as well (not pictured).

Process

Most of this dish involves prep. And that prep takes a total of five minutes if that. The main decision in this dish is the spices and what you want to use. I mixed together about 1 tablespoon. of Turmeric, Cumin powder, Chili Powder, and Garlic Powder. I might have a thing for powders that I should maybe get away from. Maybe. I probably won’t. Once all the powders are mixed together, you get a spice mixture that has a lovely golden color.

Then comes preparing the Salmon. I put it on the aluminum foil to prep because any spillage becomes just extra flavor to be locked in during the cooking process. First, you have to salt and pepper your Salmon steak. I think I’ve been watching too many cooking shows but I have discovered how important salt and pepper are. It’s really important. It can help bring out the flavor and give just a nice overall tone to the dish.

Adding a little bit of oil to the fish helps with the cooking process and makes the salmon nice and tender so I just drizzle a tiny bit on top. Then comes adding the spices! I like to sprinkle the spices on top and then gently rub them into the steak. This can make a bit of a mess but it helps push the flavor into the Salmon. Then it’s time to wrap it up in tinfoil. I like to use the burrito style of wrapping with the top and bottom being closed first.

And that’s it! Now just shove it into the oven and wait for it to cook! Just a little while later, we have golden brown salmon steak that is ready to be enjoyed.

Lessons

Use a Thermometer!

Because of the tinfoil, this recipe ends up being a blind bake which can be a little tricky to know when the salmon is done cooking. One of the best ways to get around this is to use a thermometer. This way, you can check the internal temperature of the fish without having to remove the foil.

So many choices

When looking up some tips and tricks online for cooking with tinfoil, I came across quite a few flavor profiles that can be used with this style of cooking:

  • Lemon and Butter
  • Lemon and Herbs (Dill or Rosemary)
  • Garlic Butter
  • Pesto
