Classic Cottage Loaf

A cottage loaf is a deliciously soft bread with a springy texture that melts in the mouth and is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 ¾ Cup All-Purpose Flour plus additional for dusting
  • 2 ½ Tsp Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 ½ Tsp Salt
  • 3 ½ Tbsp Butter softened and cut into pieces
  • 2 Cups Warm Water split
  • Oil

Method
 

  1. Combine flour, yeast, and salt in a mixing bowl
  2. Add butter and 1 ¼cups water and mix together, use a dough hook if using a stand mixer
  3. Add remaining water and mix until the dough pulls together into a ball.
  4. Knead for approximately 5-10 minutes or until the dough is soft to the touch
  5. Place dough ball into an oiled bowl and let proof until the dough is doubled in size (about one hour)
  6. Divide the dough into 1/3rd and 2/3rd sections respectively
  7. Shape each piece into a ball.
  8. Place the smaller ball on top of the large ball. To connect pieces, flour two fingers and pushdown through each dough ball.
  9. Cover with a cloth and allow to rise for about one hour, or until the dough is soft and springy
  10. Pre-heat over to 425 F and place a large pan of water on the bottom rack of the oven
  11. Slash bread in 8 places
  12. Reduce oven temperature to 415F and bake the for 15 minutes
  13. Reduce the oven to 375F and bake for another 20-25 minutes or until bread is golden brown
