Eyrie Dynasties: Leaders and Turmoil

After seeing the Eyrie do so well in the 2023 RootCon Tournament. I decided I wanted to take a deeper look into how the Eyrie did in some of the trackable data. Mainly, the leader that was picked and if a turmoil occurred.

I did not have this data from the RootCon Tournament. But! I did track this information during the 2023 Root Winter Tournament. I just never really had a chance to look at it. So, I wanted to take the time to find out what interesting data I could discover.

The LEaders

The first thing I wanted to look at is what leader people pick right out of the gate. And there is a split between starting with Despot and Charismatic. Despot is the starting leader 29% of the time while Charismatic was the more popular option, picked 71% of the time.

There were fifteen games where the Eyrie Turmoiled and the second leader saw a little bit more diversity with all four leaders chosen (sort of). The builder once (7%), charismatic picked four times (27%), commander picked five times (33%), and despot picked five times (33%).

The reason that I said sort of is while the Builder was chosen once, the player never took a turn with the builder leader. They put up the new leader right before the game ended.

There were two games that went to a third leader, or two turmoil, and both times the player wanted to end with the Builder leader. While one picked the leader and never got a turn, the other did get one turn played with the Builder.

Since not all games when the same number of rounds, I wanted to look out how many round each leader played. It reflects similarly to the percentage breakdown of the leaders chosen since there is an average number of turns taken each game. I did mark a round as 0.1 if the leader was chosen but was not played on a full round (i.e., the leader was picked after a turmoil, but the game ended before the Eyrie got another turn).

Wins & Turmoil

So, then it comes down to which leaders led the Eyrie to victory? The Eyrie won ten out of the thirty-eight games. The Winter Tournament win rate of 26% is a little less that what we saw at the 2023 RootCon Tournament.

Those ten wins are split between having the Charismatic leader and the despot leader. The winning split is very similar to the chosen rate with the charismatic leader made up 70% of the win while the despot leader makes up 30%.

One thing that you may have noticed is I did not talk about winning after turmoiling. Well… no one did.  There were no wins in a game that contained a turmoil. The tournament had 10 games where the Eyrie won but did not turmoil, 15 games where the Eyrie turmoiled but did not win, and 13 games where the Eyrie did not turmoil and did not win.

I would love to see how the Eyrie looks going forward and I am very much hoping to see some turmoil wins in the next tournament.
