A Bullet Journal is a great way to organize your life, keep notes on what you need to do, and organize your hopes /dreams while being creative!
I thought I would get caught up in April, and that very much didn’t happen. I’m going to blame getting sucked into playing Blue Prince. A random room draft game with puzzles? Yes, please. But time continues to march forward, and I challenged myself to come up with something for May.
There is always a general amount of research and exploration I do to come up with inspiration for my spreads. My imagination is very active, but sometimes it needs a jumpstart. While scrolling, I found a lot of designs based on flowers and nature, which makes sense with the changing of the seasons.
But I didn’t want to do that. I had a monthly spread that was flower-based already this year, and I wanted to try something different. I think I wanted to do the opposite approach to the colors of flowers because my spread ended up being black and white. And the inspiration came when I practiced on the piano: sheet music!

May
For the last four months, I did the title in each corner. Which meant that this month I had to decide, veer off the standard template, or keep the template and restart in a random corner? I somehow landed on an answer somewhere between the two. I kept the template but put the name right in the middle. It seemed like a fun idea! Although I didn’t really think about how it could impact other parts of the design.
With the title in the center, I built the habit tracker and calendar. And here is where I realized my mistake. The day count for the habit tracker was obscured by the title. Oops. I’ll probably be fine with the given context clues.
Once I had the core components, it was time to add a bit of decoration. I knew I wanted to have a music-like theme, but I wasn’t sure how I wanted to go about it. Notes just floating in space was one option, while using music bars also felt like a good approach. Again, I ended up somewhere in the middle by making several music bars and then using notes in the surrounding void space.
It did take me a second to figure out how to fill out the music bars. I landed on using existing sheet music so that at least the bars would be semi-accurate. The spacing is still all messed up, but having wavy bars already takes it a step away from “realism”.
May Habit Tracker / Calendar
I realized that I only used 10 columns for my habit tracker in April, but there are 11 items that I like to track. I tried my best to find places to keep the 11th habit market, but it got more and more lost over the course of the month. Which is why I was determined to make sure I had all 11 in May. I really like having my whole spread.
I love being able to look back and see what I want to improve on. Or what would make me happier if I weaved it into my everyday life? I know that for April, I did not practice my instruments or cook enough. The cooking one really got me down because I really want to try to eat healthier. I have the ingredients, just need to put forward the effort.
Weekly Spreads
One great thing about not having a set weekly spread is that there is more room to do whatever layout you want! This has resulted in some great-looking spreads aaaaand some not-so-great ones as well. But that’s the fun of experimenting. And, at worst, I only end up looking at the spread for a week , which ultimately flies by. I did want to put together a gallery of some of my favorites!
