2026 October Bullet Journal: Death

I am very ready for October. There are so many spooky games and movies that I want to watch, and I know that I won’t get to all of them. In the spirit of the Halloween month, I decided to save the 13th major arcana to inspire my monthly spread. Death. I find it very satisfying that death and the number 13 have been tied together for a long time. It was even a connection 400 years ago.

There is something about Tarot cards and a general spooky vibe that are deeply connected to me. That might be because I am drawn to deck that have darker art. But interpreting the future calls for belief. And the unknown is often the scariest thing.

I got extremely excited when I realized that the tarot card for my October monthly spread was death. There are so many ways to represent death in an interesting way. There are skeletons, gravestones, ghosts, but my favorite has always been the grim reaper. Specifically, the grim reaper without a face. Just a shadow in a cloak. So before referencing any of my tarot cards, my mind was set with the general idea of what I wanted.

The calendar was placed in the bottom right corner of the page to give plenty of space on the left side of the spread. I put the title above the calendar and did my best to keep it to one page. It got a little more squished than I originally planned but it worked out. And then it was time to sketch my grim reaper in the remaining space.

The outline turned out very well, but I wanted to do something a bit more special for filling the design. Especially since I wanted to black out inside the cloak. Having full black on the inside and the outside just makes a giant blob. So instead, I decided to do a cross-hatch sketch style for the outside. I think this helped create movement in the fabric and still capture the black cloak vibe. And I got to have my ghost on the inside.

One thing that stumped me was what to do with the letters in October. Filling them will black felt a little oppressive even if it matched the scheme. Then I realized I did not have orange on any other monthly spreads. Which is a little unfair to orange. And since orange and black is such a classic combination, I felt good about it.

Last Month’s Habits

So I decided to finally pull the trigger on something I have been considering for a while. I reduced the number of habits. Removed the two that have been a blank calendar for the last few months. At this moment, I can tell that I am not going to push myself for those habits, so having a reminder of that isn’t helping me.

Line Weight

One thing I wanted to pay attention to for this spread was the thickness of the pen or marker I was using. I really wanted to have darker, bolder lines for the general outlines while the inner cross hatch was to be a thin pen. The pen that I used was not as thin as I wanted but the different style of pen definitely created a good contrast for the design.
