I am not the biggest fan of salmon, but sometimes an idea comes, and it won’t go away. I decided to make oven-baked glazed salmon because I was looking for something that had a good balance of savory and sweet and brought out the umami of a dish.

This glazed salmon is a perfect addition to the dinner table being easy to make and relatively quick to cook. I was very happy to have something fresh to make on a weekday that would satiate my hunger. Sometimes, I forget to eat until I’m really hungry, and a quick to make meal is always appreciated.

Ingredients

I only used two salmon filets but this recipe can definitely be modified for more! The glaze of the salmon glaze felt even more important than the salmon in some ways. For the glaze, I stuck with some Asian classics: soy sauce and oyster sauce. I also added honey to get that stick sweetness and Worcestershire for even more flavor.

Process

Glazed salmon is such a quick and easy recipe that I’m not going to break it into parts. I started with the sauce while the fish was resting. I used fresh fish that only needed to be refrigerated so letting it rest on the counter felt like a good choice.

For the sauce, I started by mincing a clove of garlic. This is the only ingredient of the sauce that needs “preparing”. With the garlic minced, it was time to add a bunch of different sauces to create the perfect glaze. I went with more Asian-leaning flavors because that is what I have in my cupboards.

Then it’s onto preparing the fish. I started by lining a small baking dish with parchment paper. Is this necessary? No. But it does make clean-up a lot easier so it feels like the right choice. Then I placed the salmon and used half of the glaze to coat the salmon. I used a silicone brush for this part but I’m not sure how common of a tool that is so it’s fine to use any utensil that spreads.

I did the cooking in two parts because the glaze is going on in two parts. I started with a bake of 12 minutes. Then I pulled the salmon out and applied the second coat of glaze. I tried to do this as quickly as possible to prevent the salmon from losing temperature. And then it was back in the oven! Five more minutes and the salmon is ready!

Keep in mind that an internal temperature of 145℉ is recommended for salmon. Some might like it cooked less than that, but I wanted to make sure to state the recommended temperature.

Reflections

Wow. Just wow. I didn’t think I would be in love with this as much as I am. This glazed salmon makes me want to eat salmon again! The sauce was a perfect mix of sticky, sweet, savory, and umami. The sauce perfectly coats the salmon and filled me made me want more and more

Lessons

What is Umami

So I know I have used the word umami a couple of times in this article and I figured I should take a moment to explain what umami is. Umami is one of the basic five tastes. These typically include sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Umami means “delicious savory taste” in Japanese, and its taste is often described as the meaty, savory deliciousness that deepens flavor.
