2026 May Bullet Journal: The Empress and the Emporer

May has arrived in some style. It had alternated between hot and cold every other day. It was like this in April as well, but it continues fluctuating between winter and summer. I was just hoping for spring. The weather had caused a delay in the normal May sights. The flowers and trees have been taking longer to flower.

But as the weather slowly gets warmer, the world feels like it is getting busier and busier. Even on colder days, I see more runners and walkers than I previously have. All we can do is wait for things to become more consistent.

My life is still hectic, so I try to keep my consistency with my Bullet Journal. It helps keep my calendar, organize all the thoughts in my mind, keep up with where I want to grow, and just keeps me sane all around. I think I would be overwhelmed by all the things I want to do without it. My “to-do” list would be an infinite scroll in my head.

For May, I continued the count with the three and four major arcana, also known as the empress and the emperor. I am really drawn to the design on the Persona 3 Tarot cards. And these cards were no different. They had such an interesting aesthetic, more of an outline with a circular motif running through both.

The first thing that I outlined was the calendar. Since it was the majority of the two pages, I wanted to get that out of the way. Then came the May title. I have used all four corners of the page previously, so I wanted to see what other options were available to me. The side was the next space to use. The title was a little too small for this space, but I decided to commit to it.

I feel like I decided to keep the empress and emperor’s shapes relatively untouched. Their shape felt unique and interesting, and I was afraid I would mess them up if I changed them too much. But I did end up changing them a bit more than I wanted. Some aspects had to be adapted. Normally, I would split the design over the two pages, but it felt better to put them together. But that left a lot of white space.

This is where I decided to run with the circle motif that was already on the empress and the emperor. It gives such a trippy look, but I didn’t want to cover too much of the space. Having space can be just as important as the filled space. To add some diversity, I also leaned into the vine/leaf pattern that was in the back of the empress’s card.

Habit Tracking

I ended up doing one different thing with my habit tracker; this was my first six-week calendar. The habits fit into two columns when the month was five weeks or less. But six weeks pushed that over the edge. The option I ended up going with was stretching it out from two columns to three columns. While this gave quite a lot of extra space, it felt like the right thing to do. This gave my “One line a day” section a page to itself (which I do find easier to write on, but also easier to forget).

Since there was so much extra space, I wanted to pull in the design from the cover page. I decided to pull in some of the background using the circles and the vines to continue the theme.

The Color Purple

I often see purple associated with royalty. And I wanted to lean into that since the May design was the empress and the emperor. But after using the various shades of purple, I did get a little curious as to why. Why was purple associated with royalty? The answer comes down to rarity. In the past, purple dye was not readily available. And that scarcity increased its cost, making it reserved for those who could pay for it. And, often, royalty were the ones who could afford it.
